The Beauty of Iceland

In 2019 Bentley and I traveled to Iceland.  Reykjavik, on the coast of Iceland, is the country’s capital and the largest city in Iceland.  Our accommodations at the Hotel Klettur were modest and included breakfast daily. There was a heavy dark curtain hung in the room because in July there are 22 hours of daylight.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Golden Circle Island Tour.  We departed early in the morning right after breakfast.   On this tour, we were able to enjoy Iceland’s most famous attractions beginning just a short drive from the capital city.   The sights in Thingvellir National Park were stunning along with visiting Geysir geothermal area and seeing a geyser perform its beauty.  One of my favorite stops was at the Gullfoss waterfall. This waterfall is one of the 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland.  Our guide put a spin with a funny story on a lot of the sites which made the trip more interesting.  It was a long but interesting day.

The Hallgrimskirkja which is a Lutheran parish church in Reykjavik was just a short walk from the Hotel Klettur.  At 74.5 meters high, it is the largest church in Iceland and among the tallest structures in the country. We were surprised at the starkness of the church.  Unlike the cathedrals in Europe which are all adorned with gigantic paintings and statues.

Places I wished we would have visited were to swim in The Blue Lagoon and take a tour of the magma chamber of the Prihnukagigur volcano.  Iceland is the only place in the world where a magma chamber tour into a volcano is offered.

Our stay in Iceland was short because we took advantage of Iceland Air’s free Iceland stopover on our way to Paris.  The flights to Paris, France from Chicago, Boston, and Denver can be less than $700.00 round-trip which allows a free layover in Iceland.

September through March is the peak season to see the northern lights.  Kensington Tours creates private personalized for a one-of-a-kind experience designed just for you. To the Vikings, the Northern Lights were fires in the sky or the gowns of dancing angels.  Someday…  I will go back to Iceland.
